What is Sidereal Astrology?

Since you got into Astrology, you might’ve followed the Astrology that was presented to you by default; Western Astrology, following the Tropical calendar.

Let’s see…

To know your zodiac sign you looked the dates in the calendar?

To find your birth chart, you looked up a free birth chart calculator online and read the chart they gave to you?

You follow really well known astrologers and astrology pages that update you on the latest transits?

Well, all of that is great, and I’m sure you’ve gotten tons of value out of it… but have you ever considered that the zodiac followed by Western Astrology is not an accurate representation of the position of the planets in the night sky? 🤔

Let me explain…

Western Astrology follows what we call the “Tropical” system, which is based on the seasons.

While Sidereal Astrology is based on the position of the stars.

The origins of Tropical Astrology

The Tropical system is based on an algorithm that was introduced about c. 2,000 years ago. The goal was to use a system that the movement of the planets (specifically the sun) would be in sync with the seasons. This is why, every year, Aries season coincides with the Spring equinox on Mars 21st.

BUT the Tropical system doesn’t take into consideration the procession of the equinoxes.

Procession of the equinoxes

Because the Earth is not a perfect sphere, it actually wobbles on its axis, which leads to the North Pole facing a slightly different position every single year and results in our perception of the night sky progressively moving backwards over an extended period of time.

The sky moves backwards by about 1° every 72 years - which means that after 2,000 years, the sky looks much differently than how it did when the Tropical system was implemented.

The difference it makes today
There is roughly about 25° of difference between the Tropical system (which Western Astrology uses), and the Sidereal system which represents the true astronomical placements of the planets in the night sky.

That’s why, if you were to look at the night sky at the moment of your birth, you would find the sun about 25° degrees earlier than what the calendar tells you…

So yes, this will result in you having a different birth chart… and likely a different zodiac sign 🤯😜.
